The Shop at Honeywood was part of the 17th century building. The space was a dining room in the 1902 plan and almost certainly had the same function in 1864-5 when the house was the home of the author William Hale White. He mentioned a trap door in the floor which could be used to lower wine bottles into the stream below so that they would cool. Not seen the course of the culvert underneath the building yet? Come and visit us to find out more while shopping!

Between 1924 and 1930 there was a mad scramble to build new housing estates in the Carshalton area, occasioned by the need for Britain to join the modern world after the First World War.
New homes were built for the upwardly mobile, who flocked from all parts of Britain to join in the explosion of suburbia. This book describes the evolution of local estates, the growth of transport networks and other infrastructure to meet this need, and the lives of some of their founders and residents both amazing and ordinary. Published by The Friends of Honeywood Museum. Paperback, 24.6cm x 18.9cm, 174 pages, £16 Read an in-depth insight into this book here. |
