The creation of these garden pages marked the beginning of a new collaborative project between The Friends of Honeywood Museum and Sutton Cultural Services for the maintenance and restoration development of the gardens. These have a fascinating and complicated history bound to the story of the building of Honeywood and subsequent alterations.
Although no early planting survives, a number of period features and structures create an important and characterful water garden, the last major alterations being made in the Edwardian period to complement the 1902 extension which includes the billiard and drawing rooms. Working with a wonderful team of volunteers, we will be charting our progress with a project blog. Follow our rewarding and pleasurable journey revealing the hidden delights of the gardens. If you walk into the back garden at Honeywood and glance around you would probably not think that was of much historic significance. There is a lawn surrounded by borders covered with snowberry and scrubby vegetation. Look more carefully and things start to appear: burr brick-edged Victorian plant beds, a pond and little grotto, a second small pond, a well, the remains of a greenhouse and a stream which flows under the lawn, passes through a short ornamental channel and then goes under the house.
