The ledger stone to Charles Burton (died 1661) of Carshalton will be revealed for a one-off event on Sunday 23 February.

The Burtons were a major family in Carshalton during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and this is one of the few extant remains of the family in Carshalton that survives today. The slab is deeply incised, and has an excellent coat-of-arms which lead us to the 'City of the Legions' in Roman Wales!

This monument is invariably covered up under the carpet beneath the Altar in the sanctuary of the Lady Chapel, roughly behind the rails and white notice seen in the image of the East end of the chapel, and had not been seen for many years until uncovered late last year.

It has been agreed that the ledger slab should be uncovered for a short time, between 12:15 and 14:00 on Sunday 23 February, just after the Sunday service which ends around 12:00, to allow visitors a unique opportunity to view it - the Altar is VERY heavy and it will not be moved again in the foreseeable future! All are welcome - both public and congregation alike.

There will be teas/biscuits available immediately after the service, if you would like to come early for refreshment before seeing the monument. There will be other information about the monument on the day, and well-known local historian Andrew Skelton will be in attendance.
