Are you able to offer a little time to Honeywood Museum?

  • We need volunteers at Honeywood for a specific time each week/fortnight/month to take over at the desk which will free-up the two paid members of staff to do all the things they need to be getting on with which are just not possible when they are tied to the reception desk. At the moment we have two volunteers covering Thursday and Friday afternoons respectively, but it would be really good to have more. Full induction training will be provided so that you know how to take bookings and operate the till etc.

  • The frequent craft activities are particularly popular with families. If crafts are your scene then please let us know! We need volunteers to come up with craft ideas and/or help with the preparation of all the craft materials needed. If you are a 'Blue Peter' person at heart, then this is definitely for you!

  • All the school holiday activities and special weekend events are hugely popular and the Museum gets very busy.  Volunteers are needed to help the Museum staff welcome visitors, top up craft supplies and make sure the Museum’s toys are played with properly and put away tidily.

  • If you would like to consider volunteering at Honeywood then please email Jane Howard, Curator (jane.howard@sutton.gov.uk) and arrange for a chat and a cup of coffee!

Stewarding and general support volunteer at Honeywood Museum
A London Borough of Sutton Museum and Heritage Service role

Honeywood is a Grade II listed building next to the picturesque Carshalton Ponds. The family-friendly museum re-opened in May 2012 after a complete refurbishment following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It has beautifully restored period details including the Edwardian Billiards Room, Drawing Room and Bathroom. Exhibitions tell the story of the house and the people who lived here. There is a diverse on-going programme of events for visitors of all ages.

It is very much a joint community project, for whilst the building is owned, maintained and managed by the London Borough of Sutton, through the “Museum, Heritage and Arts Service” it opens to the public with the help and support of the Friends of Honeywood Museum. This is a charity which has funded numerous purchases for the house and Museum Collection. It runs and supports events, the garden, stewarding and so much more.

What’s involved? This list gives an idea of the varied duties that are involved in the week to week running of Honeywood. We don’t expect all volunteers in this role to undertake all of these:

Stewarding at events and during family activities – keeping craft activities well supplied and monitoring use of toys etc.

Children’s buggy parking

Photocopying and laminating

Distribution of printed promotional material

Replacing and updating posters on railings and notice board

Preparation of craft activity materials

General tidying and monitoring of floors and corridors to ensure that these  are clear and there are no slip hazards

Assisting with the decoration of the house and setting up of events

Odd jobs – moving tables, chairs etc.

This role will suit people who have:

An interest in supporting Honeywood Museum and its activities

Enthusiasm to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, disability, race or culture, has an enjoyable visit to Honeywood Museum

Good communication skills and the ability to work within a team setting

An interest in the history of Honeywood and the local area

What’s in it for you?

The chance to make a positive contribution to the upkeep and continuing development of Honeywood Museum

Be a part of our dedicated and friendly volunteer team

The opportunity to help visitors to Honeywood have an enjoyable experience

Time commitment

Stewarding is mainly required at events and during school holiday periods. All general tasks are ongoing and could be undertaken at any time the Museum is open.

Please contact the Curator with your availability.
