ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION AT HONEYWOOD - AN OVERVIEW
Saturday 10th July to Sunday 18th July 2010
John Phillips

Three additional days of excavation, washing, recording and back-filling have been announced:
Sunday 25th July, Saturday 31st July and Sunday 1st August
All dates from around 10.30am to 5pm

This summer the Carshalton and District History and Archaeology Society, the Friends of Honeywood Museum and Sutton Museum and Heritage Service are carrying out and excavation in the back garden of Honeywood.

We are aiming for an examination of a pond in the northwest corner of the back garden of Honeywood and the location of two former plant beds.

The pond has clearly had a complex history and parts appear to go back to at least the eighteenth century. However, the structure is something of a mystery as its shape and function are unclear. We hope to learn more.

The museum service is planning to restore the garden at Honeywood to its Edwardian form. Many of the plant beds and structures still survive for this period. However two plant beds on the north side of the garden have gone and are only known form old and indistinct air photos.

The revised trench plan

We are hoping to more clearly define the position of these beds so that we have a basis for restoration.

There are three other aims which have been given a lower priority and will only be pursued if there is time. These are:

1. The date of a house called Wandle Lodge which stood on the land behind Honeywood next to Pound Street

2. The origin of Margaret’s Pool at the corner of West Street and Pound Street

3. The origin and purpose of a building which stood near the spill way from Margaret’s Pool

Watch these web pages for daily progress reports. If you want to know more read the research design PDF 883kb.

The excavation is starting on Saturday 10 July. It will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday the 10 and 11 July then Wednesday to Sunday 14- 18 July from
11am to 5 pm.
